Okhtyrka in brief

Okhtyrka dates its founding to 29 September 1641, when a wooden fort rose on Okhtyr Hill. In 1654 the Holy Trinity Monastery was founded on the abandoned hillfort, and a new fortress was built in a bend of the Okhtyrka River. The Okhtyrka Sloboda Cossack Regiment formed in 1655–1658, making the town one of five regimental centres of Sloboda Ukraine. The region's first district school opened here in 1675 and the Russian Empire's first tobacco factory in 1718; after 1765 the regiment became the Okhtyrka Hussars, once commanded by Denis Davydov. On 24 March 2022 Okhtyrka was awarded the honorary title Hero City of Ukraine.

Famous natives of Okhtyrka

Writer Ivan Bahrianyi (1906–1963), posthumous Shevchenko Prize laureate, and ethnographer Oleksandr Tverdokhlibov (1840–1918) were born here, as was military pilot Major Oleksandr Brynzhala (1974–2022), Hero of Ukraine. Painter Valentin Serov spent his childhood in Okhtyrka.

Local landmarks

The town lies on the left bank of the Vorskla. Its pride is the Intercession Cathedral ensemble (1753–1825), a Ukrainian Baroque monument of national importance, along with the Holy Trinity Monastery and its fortified belfry of 1741 and St Michael's Church. Since oil and gas were found in 1961, Okhtyrka has been called Ukraine's "oil capital". Our courier will deliver flowers to any part of Okhtyrka.
