Oleksandriia on the Horyn: a short history

Oleksandriia is first recorded in 1518 as Pershkova Arka, a settlement belonging to Rivne Castle, later known as Pershky and Pershkiv Mist. Around 1600, at the request of Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi, it received town rights and was renamed after his son Oleksandr. By 1629 more than 2,000 people lived here, protected by an earthen rampart on three sides and the Horyn River on the fourth. The town later passed to the Koniecpolski and Lubomirski families. In 1810 a wooden lock, lift bridge and dam were built on the river, and in the late 19th century over a hundred rafts and boats left the local wharf each year. In 1922 local students founded the first Plast scout unit in Volhynia.

Oleksandriia today

The village lies on the Horyn, 16 km from Rivne, on the Rivne — Sarny railway. Local landmarks include the Church of the Transfiguration (1842), funded by Prince F. Lubomirski, Oleksandriia Park, a protected landscape garden, remains of the old earthen rampart and the Oleksandriiska Dacha and Solomka nature reserves. The village is also known for its children's brass band Oleksandriia, founded in 1969 and a laureate of international festivals. Our courier will deliver your bouquet to any street in Oleksandriia.
