Apostolove: from Pokrovske to a railway junction

Apostolove dates back to 1793. After a stone Church of the Intercession was consecrated in 1824, the village was registered as Pokrovske. In 1904 Apostolove railway station was built nearby, and in 1923 the station settlement merged with Pokrovske and became a district centre. The town was liberated from German troops on 5 February 1944 and received town status in October 1956.

Famous people of Apostolove

Natives of Apostolove include zoologist Vasyl Abelentsev (1913–1980), author of the first volume of the Fauna of Ukraine series, poet of the Executed Renaissance Mykhailo Pronchenko (1909–1942), bayan player and professor Anatolii Semeshko (1949) and actress Hanna Topchii (1989). Locals honour the memory of soldier Andrii Dmytrenko (1993–2014).

The town on the Voshyva River lies between the Dnipro, Inhulets and Bazavluk, 24 km from Kryvyi Rih, and is a major railway junction of the Zaporizhzhia–Kryvyi Rih and Dnipro–Kherson lines. Sights include the Dormition, Intercession and Twelve Apostles churches, a memorial to Ukrainian soldiers on the central square, a Bohdan Khmelnytsky monument and the nearby Scythian barrows Baby and Rozkopana Mohyla.
