Bakhmach: from the first record to today

Bakhmach enters the chronicles in 1147, when the Hypatian Codex names it a town of the Principality of Chernihiv, soon destroyed in a feud between princely clans. In 1648 its residents formed the Bakhmach company (sotnia), part of the Nizhyn Regiment from 1652. The modern town grew from a railway workers' settlement after the Kursk–Kyiv (1869) and Libava–Romny (1873) lines were built. In January 1918 its defenders, including the Petro Doroshenko Regiment and the Kurin of Death, held back the Bolshevik advance on Kyiv for several days before the Battle of Kruty. Bakhmach became a town in 1938 and was liberated from occupation on 9 September 1943.

Notable people of Bakhmach

The painter and graphic artist Hnat Yaremenko (1874–1915) was born here, as were screenwriter Semen Ponomarenko (1907–1993), prose writer Volodymyr Kuzmych (1904–1943), actor Vadym Nechyporenko (1934–1998) and long-distance runner Daryna Mykhailova (b. 1989).

Bakhmach today

The town lies on the Borzenka River and is a rail junction of five directions. The Bakhmach-Pasazhyrskyi station building (1953) is an architectural monument, the city park has a children's railway with a mini station, and a series Em steam locomotive has stood here since 1988.
