What to know about Balta

The first reliable records of a small town on the Kodyma date from the 1630s. In the late 1690s Prince J?zef Lubomirski founded the border fortress of J?zefgr?d on the left bank, while Ottoman Balta grew on the right bank. In 1776 Aleksander Lubomirski backed the rebuilding of the fortress and the town received Magdeburg rights. In the 19th century Balta became one of the largest trading centres of southern Ukraine, and on 16 December 1865 the Odesa–Balta railway, the first in Russian-ruled Ukraine, was opened. Later Balta was the first capital of the Moldavian ASSR, until the 1929 decision to move it to Tiraspol.

Famous people of Balta

Documentary director Volodymyr Shevchenko (1929–1987), Shevchenko Prize laureate and author of Chernobyl: Chronicle of Difficult Weeks, was born here, as were librarian Kostiantyn Rubynskyi (1860–1930), stage designer Semen Blaivas (1914–1990) and Colonel General Viktor Strelnykov (1946), commander of the Ukrainian Air Force. Locals honour the memory of senior soldier Vitalii Porfiriev (1995–2015).

Balta today

The town lies in the Kodyma valley, 218 km from Odesa. Its landmarks include the Dormition Cathedral (1903–1911), St Stanislaus Church (1765), the Podolian Regiment barracks (1780), St Theodosius Monastery (1908), Landau Pharmacy (1821) and the fire tower (1925).
