Bila Tserkva: from Yuriiv to today

The story of Bila Tserkva begins in 1032, when Yaroslav the Wise built the fortress of Yuriiv on the rocky left bank of the Ros, naming it after his Christian name Yurii. The chronicles first mention the town in 1115. After nomads destroyed Yuriiv, a white-stone bishop's cathedral remained on Castle Hill, and the new town took its name from it — Bila Tserkva means "White Church". Sigismund III Vasa confirmed its Magdeburg rights in 1589, and in 1651 Bohdan Khmelnytskyi signed the Treaty of Bila Tserkva here. Hetman Ivan Mazepa lived in the castle from 1703 and began St Nicholas Church in 1706. In 1774 the estate passed to Ksawery Branicki, and in November 1918 the Directorate uprising that ended in the march on Kyiv started here.

Notable people of Bila Tserkva

The town is the birthplace of mathematician Yurii Linnyk (1915–1972), a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and physicist Bentsion Vul (1903–1985), known for research on dielectrics and semiconductors. Fighter pilot Dmytro Kolomiiets (1973–2022), posthumously named Hero of Ukraine, was also born here.

Bila Tserkva today

The Ros River runs 16 km through the city, separating the centre from Zarichchia. Its highlight is the 297-hectare Oleksandriia Arboretum with the Echo Colonnade, the Chinese Bridge and the Ruins. The historic centre has the Empire-style Trading Rows (1809–1814), the Winter Palace, the Transfiguration Cathedral and the Church of St John the Baptist, now a house of organ and chamber music.
