Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi: a town with ancient roots

The story of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi begins in the 6th century BC, when Milesian colonists founded the city of Tyras (Ophiussa). Over the centuries it was known as Bilhorod, Asprokastron, Cetatea Alb? and Akkerman, receiving its current name on 9 August 1944. The Ottomans captured it in 1484, and in 1595 Cossacks of Hetman Hryhorii Loboda campaigned against Akkerman. Visitors included Alexander Pushkin (1821), Adam Mickiewicz (1825), Lesya Ukrainka, Mykola Lysenko and Maria Zankovetska.

Famous natives

The town's best-known modern native is Vasyl Lomachenko (born 1988), two-time Olympic champion and professional world boxing champion. Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae V?c?roiu (born 1943) and Greek composer and pianist Nikolas Astrinidis (1921–2010) were also born here.

Landmarks everyone knows

The town stands on the Dniester Estuary and is one of the oldest in Ukraine. Its symbol is the Akkerman Fortress (13th–15th centuries), next to the site of ancient Tyras. Medieval heritage includes the Church of the Dormition and the Church of St. John the Baptist (13th–14th centuries) and the Armenian Church of the Dormition (14th–15th centuries), plus a local history museum. The town has a seaport, a railway station and a river terminal, and is known for fish and canned food production.
