A short history of Bilozerka

Bilozerka dates from 1780, when General Ivan Hannibal, one of the builders of Kherson, received land by Lake Bile and founded an estate here, first called Ivanivka. Zaporozhian winter camps are recorded nearby as early as 1754. In 1781–1782 Hannibal built the first Church of St John the Baptist. In 1798 the estate passed to the Skadovsky family, giving the name Skadovka, and in 1847 the settlement became a market town. Excavations in 1886–1889 uncovered Copper-Bronze Age burial mounds and three anthropomorphic stelae. On 11 November 2022 the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated Bilozerka.

Notable people of Bilozerka

The best-known native is Oscar-winning film director and actor Serhii Bondarchuk (1920–1994). Painter Mykola Skadovskyi (1846–1892) and educator Olha Skorokhodova (1911–1982), to whom the local museum devotes a tactile exhibition, were also born here.

Bilozerka today

The settlement lies on Lake Bile, linked to the Dnipro by a channel, where the Bilozirka River flows in. Its landmarks include the Church of St John the Baptist (1879), built with the support of Lev Skadovskyi, the Dmytro Bahalii District Museum, the memorial sign to Serhii Bondarchuk by his birthplace and the Bilozerka springs with their "bath of youth" at 12–14 °C.
