Berdychiv: from a homestead to a fair town

Berdychiv's story begins in the 1430s, when the Grand Duke of Lithuania granted this land to Kalenyk Myshkovych and his subject Berdych founded a homestead here. In 1546 the town is recorded as property of Vasyl Tyshkevych, who built the wooden St Michael's Church. Janusz Tyshkevych founded a monastery in 1627 and handed the castle to the Discalced Carmelites in 1630; they built a church here in 1739–1754. The right to hold ten fairs a year, granted in 1765, turned Berdychiv into a major trading centre. On 14 March 1850 Honor? de Balzac married Ewelina Ha?ska in St Barbara's Church.

Famous natives of Berdychiv

Children's writer Vsevolod Nestaiko (1930–2014), writer and journalist Vasily Grossman (1905–1964) and world high-jump champion Yurii Krymarenko (1983) were born here. According to one version, Joseph Conrad was born here too; a museum dedicated to him opened in 2015. Berdychiv native soldier Ihor Prokopiuk (1978–2023) was posthumously named Hero of Ukraine.

Berdychiv today

The town lies on the Hnylopiat River, 44 km south of Zhytomyr. Its key sights are the Discalced Carmelite Monastery complex, an architectural monument of national importance, St Barbara's Church, St Nicholas Cathedral and the Museum of Berdychiv History.
