Berezhany: from the first record to today

Berezhany is first recorded in 1375. In 1530 King Sigismund I the Old granted the town Magdeburg rights, and the same year it passed to voivode Mykola Sieniawski, whose family held Berezhany until the 18th century. Between 1534 and 1554 the Sieniawskis built a castle here that now forms the core of a state historical and architectural reserve. The Berezhany gymnasium, where Markiian Shashkevych and Bohdan Lepkyi studied, is one of the oldest in Galicia.

Notable people of Berezhany

Graphic artist Olena Kulchytska (1877–1967), a Shevchenko Prize laureate, was born here. The town is linked with poet Markiian Shashkevych (1811–1843), leader of the Ruthenian Triad, and poet and novelist Bohdan Lepkyi (1872–1941), who has his own museum here. Locals also honour Vitalii Skakun (1996–2022), a native marine sapper who on 24 February 2022 gave his life blowing up the bridge to Henichesk and was posthumously named a Hero of Ukraine.
