Bezliudivka: From the First Mention to Today

The oldest document to mention Bezliudivka is dated 30 July (9 August) 1677 and records an interrogation about a stolen horse in the village. Historians believe the village appeared between 1673 and 1677. Its name comes from the word for a deserted place: in August 1668, during the anti-Muscovite uprising, Cossacks and Tatars burned part of the village of Babai here, and Cossacks began settling the site in the 1670s. In the 18th century the settlement split into Old and New Bezliudivka, and from the mid-19th century it was the centre of Bezliudivka volost. It has been an urban-type settlement since 19 October 1938 and the centre of its own hromada since 2020.

People Linked to Bezliudivka

Notable residents include the archaeologist and Ukrainian People's Republic army medic Ivan Levytskyi (1896–1952), dairy worker Varvara Saveliieva (1928–2016), a Hero of Socialist Labour, and composer Anatolii Haidenko (born 1937). Weaver Tetiana Fedosova (born 1961) designed the settlement's coat of arms.

Landmarks and Local Features

The settlement lies on the left bank of the Uda and on both banks of the Studenok, 13 km from central Kharkiv. Its main landmark is the Church of the Intercession, whose present building dates from 1861, and there is a local history museum. Pine woods surround the settlement, and flooded sand quarries have become lakes such as Pidborivske, Nahorivske and Zhuravlyne. Flowers can be delivered to any part of Bezliudivka.
