A short history of Boryslav

Boryslav is first recorded in a charter of Queen Jadwiga dated 19 March 1387. From the mid-19th century it became a centre of oil, ozokerite and gas extraction; the ozokerite deposit was discovered in 1853 by Lviv industrialist Robert Doms. The railway arrived on 31 December 1872, and in 1873 there were 12,000 hand-dug oil pits here. Modern Boryslav took shape in 1930, when Tustanovychi and neighbouring villages were merged into it.

Notable people of Boryslav

Writer and translator Vira Vovk (1926–2022), who worked in Brazil, was born here. Jan Zeh (1817–1897), inventor of the kerosene lamp, was the town's first pharmacist, and writer Stefan Kovaliv (1848–1920) lived and worked here. Ivan Franko devoted his novel Boryslav Is Laughing (1881) to the local oil fields.

Boryslav today

The town lies in the Carpathian foothills on the Tysmenytsia River, bordering Truskavets and Drohobych. Its sights reflect its oil heritage: the Museum of the Oil and Gas Industry of Ukraine with an open-air section, the Jan Zeh Pharmacy Museum, the Oil City well site (1907–1952) and the Black Gold oil derrick model, as well as the Boryslav Paleogene geological outcrop and St. Barbara's Church.
