What to know about Borshchiv

Borshchiv is first recorded in 1456, on the site of an old Rus fortification. In 1620 it was bought by Kamianets judge Jerzy Dydynski, and in 1629 it received Magdeburg rights, a coat of arms with a golden sheaf and three annual fairs. The Ottomans held the town in 1672–1683, and from 1772 it belonged to Austria as a district centre. In July 1919 the government of the West Ukrainian People's Republic moved here, and on 8 July Symon Petliura arrived for talks.

Notable people of Borshchiv

Theatre director and actor Les Kurbas (1887–1937) worked in the town. Borshchiv native Ihor Dykun (born 1994) is a Hero of Ukraine (2022) and commander of the 32nd Separate Mechanized Brigade.

Borshchiv today

The town lies on the left bank of the Nichlava, a tributary of the Dniester, 102 km from Ternopil. Landmarks include the Church of Our Lady of the Scapular (1763) on the site of the former castle, the Church of the Dormition (1886), the Cathedral of the Borshchiv Icon of the Mother of God (2009) and the Adam Mickiewicz monument (1898). Every year it hosts the Borshch'yiv borscht festival and a festival of embroidered shirts; the local shirt embroidered with black thread is the region's hallmark.
