What to know about Borzna

Borzna grew from a farmstead of the late 15th century that had become a village by the mid-16th century. In 1634 it received Magdeburg rights and a coat of arms with a golden Maltese cross over a silver crescent. In 1648 the Borzna Regiment was formed under Petro Zabila. In 1663, after the Black Council, Hetman Ivan Briukhovetskyi executed Yakym Somko and Vasyl Zolotarenko here. Borzna became a county town in 1781, and Taras Shevchenko visited it on 1 February 1847. After occupation in spring 2022, the town was liberated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 1 April.

Notable people of Borzna

Borzna is the birthplace of Colonel Semen Palii (1645–1710), educator Khrystyna Alchevska (1841–1920), decorative artist Oleksandr Saienko (1899–1985), sculptor Halyna Kalchenko (1926–1975) and Ivan Pliushch (1941–2014), twice Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada and Hero of Ukraine. Writer Panteleimon Kulish spent his last years at the nearby Motronivka farmstead.

Borzna today

The town stretches along both banks of the Borzenka River, 104 km southeast of Chernihiv. Parks and gardens cover more than half of its area, and storks nest right in the streets. Visit the Kulish museum reserve Hannyna Pustyn in Motronivka, the Saienko Estate art museum, the local history museum and the Church of St Basil the Great.
