Boston: a bit of history

Boston was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by English Puritans led by John Winthrop and named after Boston in Lincolnshire. The Boston Tea Party of 1773 became a defining event on the road to independence. On 19 March 1822 residents accepted the charter that made the Town of Boston a city. The writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was born in Boston, as was Samuel Adams (1722–1803), Founding Father and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The silversmith and engraver Paul Revere (1735–1818), known for his midnight ride of 1775, was born in the North End.
