Brody: a town with a chronicle history

Brody is first mentioned in the Instruction of Volodymyr Monomakh under 1084. On 22 August 1584 King Stephen Bathory granted the town, then named Lubicz by Stanislaw Zolkiewski, Magdeburg rights. Grand Crown Hetman Stanislaw Koniecpolski opened the Brody Academy in 1637 and built a five-bastion fortress, and from 1704 the town belonged to the Potocki family. Under Austria Brody was a free trade city until 1880, and in 1848 it was the second-largest town in Galicia after Lviv; its large Jewish community earned it the name "Galician Jerusalem".

Notable people of Brody

Austrian writer Joseph Roth (1894–1939) was born here, and Impressionist painter Ivan Trush (1869–1941) graduated from the local gymnasium that now bears his name. Pilot Oleksandr Maryniak (1979–2022), a Brody native, is a Hero of Ukraine (posthumously), and a street in the town is named after him.

Brody today

The town lies on the Brody Plain on the Bovdurka and Sukhovilka rivers. Highlights include Brody Castle with the Potocki Palace, the fortified Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, the former Great Synagogue (1742), the Holy Trinity Church (1744) and the local history museum, plus Raikivka Park.
