Brooklyn: a New York City borough with Dutch roots
Brooklyn is one of New York City's five boroughs and the most populous of them. Its story begins in 1646 with the Dutch settlement of Breuckelen, named after Breukelen in the Netherlands; the name first appeared in print in 1663. Kings County was created under British rule in 1683, the Village of Brooklyn was incorporated in 1816 and the City of Brooklyn formed in 1834. The Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan was completed in 1883, and on 1 January 1898 Brooklyn became part of Greater New York. The borough's Dutch motto, Een Draght Mackt Maght, means "In unity there is strength".
Famous Brooklynites
