What to know about Burshtyn

Burshtyn grew from the settlement of Nove Selo, recorded in 1554. In the late 16th century it belonged to the Skarbek family and from 1630 to the Jab?onowski magnates. In October 1629 registered Cossacks and the Crown army under Stefan Chmielecki defeated a Tatar raiding force nearby. The first Lviv–Chernivtsi train passed through Burshtyn station on 1 September 1866, and the Burshtyn power plant, whose last unit started in 1969, was built in the 1960s.

Famous names linked to Burshtyn

Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart (1791–1844), son of the great composer, lived and worked here in 1809–1811 and founded the town's first secular choir. Poet Marta Hai (1922–2003) lived and worked in Burshtyn, and singer and actress Mika Newton was born here.

Burshtyn today

The town lies in the Hnyla Lypa valley, and the geometric centre of Ukrainian Galicia is on its south-eastern outskirts. The Burshtyn plant is the largest thermal power station in Western Ukraine. Sights include the Skarbek-Jab?onowski burial chapel (1813), the 18th-century Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Holy Trinity Church and the Berehynia museum.
