Busk: a little history

Busk, then called Buzhesk, first appears in the Primary Chronicle under 1097–1098 as an already well-fortified town. In 1100 it became the capital of an appanage principality ruled by Prince Davyd Ihorovych. In 1411 Prince Siemowit IV granted Busk Magdeburg rights, one of the first towns in Galicia to receive them. In 1539–1541 the first paper mill in Ukraine opened here, and its paper was used for the Ostroh Bible of 1581.

Notable people of Busk

Lawyer Yevhen Petrushevych (1863–1940), President of the Ukrainian National Council of the West Ukrainian People's Republic, was born in Busk, as was philologist and ethnographer Ilarion Sventsitskyi (1876–1956).

Busk today

Busk stands on four rivers — the Western Bug, Poltva, Solotvyna and Rokytna — 51 km from Lviv, and a stork appears on its coat of arms. Sights include the wooden St. Paraskeva Church with its bell tower, St. Onuphrius Church in Voliany, the Badeni Palace, St. Stanislaus Church and the Great Synagogue (1842–1843), as well as one of Europe's oldest Jewish cemeteries, with a grave from 1520.
