Chahor: from a Slavic settlement to today

The history of this place is older than its name: in the Kodyn tract between Chahor and Ostrytsia, archaeologists from Chernivtsi University excavated a 5th–7th-century Slavic settlement in the 1970s, finding a fire steel, an iron bowl and pottery. Under its present name Chahor is known from the second half of the 18th century — in 1774 it and Molodiia together had 172 families, about 960 people. In 1867 construction began on the railway from Chernivtsi through the village to Hlyboka and Vadul-Siret; before it Chahor had 67 houses, by 1905 already 163. The stone Church of St. Demetrius was consecrated in 1884, and the first two-grade school opened next to it in 1890.

Notable people of Chahor

Chahor is the birthplace of the Berariu brothers: writer, cultural figure and doctor of law Constantin Berariu (1870–1929) and actor and director Aurel Berariu (1879–1912) of the Junimea society stage in Chernivtsi. The village also honours volunteer doctor Heorhii Tesliuk (1979–2016), who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Landmarks and local character

The Kiziia River flows through the village centre into the Derelui. Key places include the Church of St. Demetrius (1884), the first village school building (1890), the House of Creativity and Leisure and the Kodyn tract. Chahor has practically merged with Chernivtsi: city trolleybuses No. 3 and No. 6 reach its edge, and the runway of Chernivtsi International Airport lies on village land.
