A short history of Chechelnyk

The written history of Chechelnyk begins in 1529, when guard settlements on its site at the edge of the Budjak steppe were recorded; wine from Muntenia and Wallachia was carried through here. It became a market town in 1635 and belonged to the Lubomirski princes. In 1795 it was renamed Olhopil and made a district centre, but in 1812 the district moved and the old name returned. In 1796 Catherine II granted the town to Count Ivan Gudovich, and a sugar factory was founded in 1875.

Chechelnyk is the birthplace of Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector (1920–1977), trumpeter and Kyiv Conservatory professor Vilhelm Yablonskyi (1889–1977), mathematician David Milman (1913–1982) and paediatrician Varvara Labzina (1926–2007). Locals honour junior sergeant Oleksandr Voit (1974–2022), who died defending Ukraine.

Chechelnyk today

The town lies on the Savranka, a tributary of the Southern Bug. Its landmarks are the stone Church of St Joseph (1786), the Archangel Michael Convent and the synagogue, with old underground passages beneath the town. Karmeliukove Podillia National Nature Park is close by. We will deliver a bouquet to any address in Chechelnyk.
