Chemerivtsi: a bit of history
Chemerivtsi's story as a town begins on 31 December 1450, when King Casimir IV granted landowner Pawe? Szczukowski the privilege to move the village to Magdeburg law. On 2 June 1588 diplomat Erich Lassota passed through the town, then called Czemorowice. On 23 April 1646 Hetman Marcin Kalinowski gave the town to his son Samuel Jerzy; under the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth it had its own seal inscribed "MIASTO / CZEME / ROWCE". After 1793 Chemerivtsi became a small town of Kamianets-Podilskyi district in Podolia Governorate, with 166 craftsmen, a distillery and a watermill. It was an urban-type settlement from 1959 and has been a selyshche since 2024.
Notable people of Chemerivtsi
Film actor, director and producer David Yanover (1905–1972), who worked on The Blue Arrow and The Loss of the Squadron, was born here. Another native, Bohdan Tryshnevskyi (1998–2022), was a senior lieutenant of Ukraine's Air Assault Forces who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
