Chudniv in brief

Chudniv is recorded from 1416, when its residents paid three buckets of honey to St Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv; a castle and an annual St Peter's fair already existed. A 1471 survey of the Kyiv land describes Chudniv Castle armed with three cannons and two arquebuses. From 1507 the town belonged to the Ostrozky princes. In 1660 the Muscovite army of boyar Sheremetev capitulated near Chudniv, leading to the Treaty of Slobodyshche. The town's 600th anniversary was marked nationally in 2016, and it has held town status since 2012.

Notable people of Chudniv

The name of Belarusian and Polish writer Jan Barszczewski (d. 1851) is linked with Chudniv. Sculptor Kostiantyn Lozovyi (1930–1976), churchman Stepan Orlyk (1891–1938) and writer Anatolii Siryk (b. 1939) were born here. The town also honours its native Senior Sergeant Oleksandr Borushevskyi (1984–2016), who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Chudniv today

Chudniv stands on the Teteriv River on the N03 Zhytomyr–Chernivtsi highway. Its oldest landmark is the Catholic church of 1760; the Church of Saints Peter and Paul (1769), the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (1772) and the Church of the Resurrection (1780) also survive, and the Battle of Chudniv memorial opened in Shabelianka in 2011.
