Deliatyn: from the first record to today

Deliatyn was first recorded on 9 March 1400, when King W?adys?aw II Jagie??o granted the lands above the Prut to the brothers Stetsko and Ivashko Nehovych, who from the 1440s called themselves Deliatynsky. Salt mining and salt boiling drove the town's growth: it became a town in 1554 and received Magdeburg rights in 1579. A castle with a large private library was built here in 1645, and in the 18th century the town belonged to the Potocki family. Trains to Transcarpathia ran through Deliatyn from 1894, and by the late 1920s about a thousand visitors a year came for its salt baths.

Notable people of Deliatyn

Natives include woodcarver Vasyl Turchyniak (1864–1939), Polish painter Fryderyk Pautsch (1877–1950), pianist Halyna Lahodynska (1900–1964) and writer Lesia Verkhovynka (1903–1936). Writer and lawyer Marko Cheremshyna lived here in 1908–1912; his house is now a literary memorial museum.

Landmarks and local highlights

The settlement lies in the Prut valley where the Liubizhnia and Peremyska rivers join it. Highlights include the wooden Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God (1620) with its bell tower, the Church of St Francis, the town hall, the Liubizhnianskyi Huk waterfall, the Klyvskyi botanical reserve and Morske Oko lake.
