Derhachi: from the First Record to Today
The first written record of the settlement, then called Derkachi, is the 1660 Kharkiv census, which lists 26 families of settlers from the Right Bank. The settlement belonged to the Belgorod defensive line; Crimean Tatars destroyed it in 1680, and a new fortress was built in the 1730s. In the 18th century Derhachi was a company town of the Kharkiv Sloboda Cossack Regiment, with members of the Kovalevsky family serving as captains. The name comes from the legendary Cossack Derkach and the corncrake bird; until 1943 the town was called Derkachi. It became an urban-type settlement in 1938 and a town in 1977. In 2022 the town was not occupied: on 9 March Russian troops were driven out of the area around Derhachi.
