Dykanka: from the Cossack era to Gogol's Evenings

Dykanka is recorded from 1658, when the troops of Poltava colonel Martyn Pushkar and Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi clashed nearby. From 1660 it belonged to the Budyshche company of the Poltava regiment, and in 1687 Hetman Ivan Samoilovych granted it to General Chancellor Vasyl Kochubei, on whose estate the chronicler Samiilo Velychko lived and worked. A triumphal arch was raised in 1820 to mark Emperor Alexander I's visit in 1817. Dykanka became an urban-type settlement in 1957 and was made famous by Nikolai Gogol's Evenings on a Farm Near Dykanka.

Names linked with Dykanka

Natives include statesman Viktor Kochubei (1768–1834), astrophysicist and director of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory Mykola Steshenko (1927–2018) and linguist Anatolii Neliuba (born 1961). Beekeeper Mykola Vitvytskyi (1780–1853), inventor of a multi-storey bell-shaped hive, lived and is buried here.

Set on the right bank of the Vorskla 29 km from Poltava, Dykanka is the heart of the 11,945-hectare Dykanskyi Regional Landscape Park. Highlights are the Triumphal Arch (1820), St Nicholas Church (1794), the Kochubei family church, the Baroque Trinity Church (1780), the ancient Kochubei oaks and the Lilac and Fir groves that host the Songs of the Lilac Grove festival every May.
