A short history of Dobrovelychkivka

Dobrovelychkivka dates from 18 December 1776, when Major Velychkivskyi received land for a farmstead at the headwaters of the Dobra River; a year later he sold it to Lieutenant Revutskyi, and the settlement was called Revutske for over a century. It became a market town in 1848 and was officially renamed Dobrovelychkivka in 1883. A women's teachers' seminary opened here in 1912. It was an urban-type settlement from 1957, a district centre until 2020, and is now a settlement. Locals remember Senior Soldier Dmytro Riabyi (1992–2014), a native of the town.

Notable people of Dobrovelychkivka

Natives include composer Yevhen Yutsevych (1901–1988), author of the opera Kyrylo Kozhumiaka, bandura player Volodymyr Horbatiuk (1951–2023), painter Leonida Husarenko (born 1926), and biologists Prokip Ivanchenko (1907–1975), rector of Odesa State University, and Ivan Pohrebniak (1908–1982).

Dobrovelychkivka today

The settlement lies on the Dobra River, 24 km from Pomichna station. Its best-known sight is the Geographical Centre of Ukraine memorial sign; since 2005 the point here has been called Ukraine's geometric centre. Visit the local history museum in the former zemstvo building (1892) and the arboretum founded in the late 19th century by P. Revutskyi.
