Drabiv: from a Cossack farmstead to a town

The earliest records of Drabiv date to 1680, when the Cossack Ivan Myrovych, later a colonel of the Pereiaslav Regiment, took land on the Zolotonoshka River next to an old farmstead and received a royal charter for it in 1691. In 1775 Catherine II granted Drabiv to Count Petro Zavadovskyi, and after 1843, under the Bariatynskyi family, a flax mill, a distillery, a brickworks and a stud farm opened here. In 1848 Drabiv became a market town and volost centre with 4,700 residents, and from 1923 to 2021 it was the centre of Drabiv district.

Notable people of Drabiv

Drabiv is the birthplace of literary scholar and academician Ihor Dzeverin (1929–2001) and People's Artist of Ukraine Mykola Kolomiiets (1942–2009). The town honours its defenders Oleksandr Potapenko (1970–2014), Volodymyr Onopriienko (1977–2021) and Valerii Bilous (1986–2022).

Landmarks and local highlights

The Zolotonoshka River rises in Drabiv. Drabiv Park, a 59-hectare protected landscape park since 1972, lies on the northern edge of town, and nearby grows the "Bear Hazel", a Turkish hazel over 150 years old and one of the two oldest trees of its kind in Ukraine. The Drabiv Local History Museum at 77 Tsentralna Street holds over 1,500 items, including a copy of the charter with the first written mention of the town.
