What to know about Edmonton
Edmonton grew out of the fur trade: in 1795 the Hudson's Bay Company built Fort Edmonton on the North Saskatchewan River, naming it after Edmonton in Middlesex, England. By 1813 the fort stood in today's Rossdale, the start of a permanent settlement. Edmonton became a town in 1892 under its first mayor Matthew McCauley, a city of 8,350 people in 1904, and the capital of the new province of Alberta on September 1, 1905. Blatchford Field, opened in 1929 as Canada's first licensed airfield, carried mail and medicine north and earned the city its name "Gateway to the North".
Edmonton's Ukrainian heritage
Edmonton is one of the two largest centres of Ukrainian life in Canada, with 9.3% of residents reporting Ukrainian origin in 2021. St. Josaphat Cathedral, seat of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton, was painted by Julian Butsmaniuk (1885–1967), and St. John Cathedral seats the Ukrainian Orthodox Eparchy of Western Canada. William Hawrelak (1915–1975), of Ukrainian descent, was the city's longest-serving mayor, and a Holodomor memorial has stood by City Hall since 1983.
