Enschede: a bit of history
Enschede is known from 1119, when its name was recorded as Anneschethe, from an Old Saxon word meaning border. It received town rights around 1300, confirmed in 1325 by Bishop Jan van Diest of Utrecht. On 18 October 1597 the town surrendered without a fight to Prince Maurice, who ordered its fortifications dismantled. After the great fire of 1862 Enschede rebuilt itself as the leading textile centre of the Netherlands, its population growing fivefold between 1870 and 1900, and on 14 September 1964 the Twente Institute of Technology, today the University of Twente, opened here.
