Haivoron: from Slavic furnaces to a railway junction

As early as the 6th–7th centuries an early Slavic iron-working centre operated near Haivoron on the right bank of the Southern Buh; in 1960–1961 archaeologists uncovered 25 smelting furnaces here. The modern town grew from the merger of Haivoron, Strunkove and Tashlyk Strunkivskyi villages: in 1752 land was set aside for a church in Strunkove, and in 1753 a wooden Church of St John the Baptist, moved from the village of Hromy near Uman, was completed. Narrow-gauge locomotive repair workshops opened in 1897 and later became the diesel locomotive repair plant. Haivoron became an urban-type settlement in 1938 and a town in 1949. The area honours its defenders, among them Colonel Serhii Babchuk (1971–2022), who fell in the battle for Volnovakha.

Notable people of Haivoron

Natives include actress Hanna Yanushevych (1907–1983), People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR, archaeologist Oleksandr Dzyhovskyi (1953–2020), and actor, showman and composer Mykhailo Kryshtal (born 1970).

Haivoron today

The town lies on the Southern Buh and is the easternmost town of historical Podillia. It is a railway junction where the Rudnytsia–Bershad–Haivoron narrow-gauge line still runs. Sights include the station water tower (1895), the railway administration building (1897), a 1904 mill, the MT-202 steam locomotive monument and a Taras Shevchenko monument. Local granite was used for Odesa railway station and buildings on Khreshchatyk. We deliver flowers to any part of Haivoron.
