Hertsa: from the first record to today

Hertsa's written history begins with a Moldavian charter of 1437, when houses already stood on both banks of the Hertsa River, also called the Hertsivka. In 1732 the settlement became a trading town, and in 1777 it was made a district centre of the Principality of Moldavia. After 1834 it lost its administrative role but stayed an important trading hub. Hertsa became part of Romania in 1861 and remained so until 1940; in 1992 it became the centre of the new Hertsa Raion, and since 2018 it has led the Hertsa urban hromada.

Famous people of Hertsa

Hertsa is the birthplace of Gheorghe Asachi (1788–1869), a Romanian and Moldovan writer, educator and lithographer, of Moisei Goldblat (1896–1974), an actor and director of the Jewish theatre, and of the Anglo-American political scientist Herman Finer (1898–1969). The town also honours its native Korneliy Zvynka, a chief sergeant of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Landmarks and local character

The main architectural landmark is the early 19th-century St. Spyridon Church, while the Palace of Culture occupies a former synagogue. According to the 2001 census, most residents are Romanians. The Prut leather goods factory is one of the largest employers, alongside a brick works. Roads T-26-04 and T-26-06 lead to the Diakivtsi border checkpoint.
