Hlyboka: from the first record to today

Hlyboka is first recorded in 1438, when Moldavian ruler Ilie I granted the area to court judge Petru Hudyma. The name simply reflects its setting in a deep hollow. In 1491 Stephen III confirmed the village's transfer to courtier Yudka. In 1774 Hlyboka, like all of Bukovina, passed to the Habsburgs; a distillery was built in 1857 and Hlyboka-Bukovynska station opened in 1883 on the Chernivtsi — Suceava railway. From 1919 to 1940 the settlement was called Ad?ncata.

Notable people of Hlyboka

Natives include Bukovinian public figure Ilarii Okunevskyi (1832—1896), poet and artist Domka Botushanska (1912—1994), writer Yarema Kaniuk (1909—1933) and Honoured Artist of Ukraine Anna-Dariia Andrusiak (1957—2025). Locals also honour Valerii Krasnian (1971—2022), a volunteer "cyborg" and one of the symbols of the defence of Donetsk Airport.

Hlyboka today

The town lies on the Dereghlui River, 30 km from Chernivtsi. Its central square holds a Taras Shevchenko monument; nearby are the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Sorrows (1906), the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God (1909), the Skibniewski estate and Hlyboka Park.
