Hlukhiv, the Hetman capital

Hlukhiv is first recorded as a town of the Chernihiv principality in the Hypatian Chronicle under 1152, and its first known prince, Symeon Mykhailovych, ruled from 1247. Restored by magnate Oleksandr Pisochynskyi, the town received Magdeburg rights in 1644. From 1708 to 1764 Hlukhiv was the capital of the Hetmanate: a palace was built here for Hetman Ivan Skoropadskyi, Hetman Danylo Apostol founded the Hlukhiv singing school in 1730, and Kyrylo Rozumovskyi was elected hetman here in 1750. The town marked its millennium in 1992.

Hlukhiv is the birthplace of composers Maksym Berezovskyi (1745–1777) and Dmytro Bortnianskyi (1751–1825), founders of Ukrainian choral music who first studied at the local singing school, as well as painter Anton Losenko (1737–1773), composer Yurii Shaporin (1887–1966) and actress Ada Rohovtseva (b. 1937).

Landmarks of Hlukhiv

The town stands on the Esman River. Its landmarks include St. Nicholas Church (1693–1695) on the main square, the Church of the Three Anastasias (1884–1897), the Transfiguration Church (1765), the Church of the Ascension by architect Andrii Kvasov, the Kyiv Gate of the town fortress (1766–1769) and the monument to Bortnianskyi and Berezovskyi.
