A short history of Horodok

Horodok is first recorded in a 1493 register of Podolian Voivodeship settlements as Novodvor; by 1524 sources call it Bedrykhiv Horodok. On 20 June 1653 a Cossack revolt against Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky broke out near Horodok and halted his campaign into western Ukraine. A royal charter of 1786 granted town rights, and in 1796 Horodok got its coat of arms with a silver wall between two golden hills. In 1837 Baron Geismar built a sugar factory here, the second in Ukraine, and from 1875 the Vinogradsky family owned the town.

Famous people of Horodok

Microbiologist Sergei Winogradsky (1856–1953), discoverer of chemosynthesis and the town's last owner, settled here in 1905 and electrified Horodok. Clara Lemlich (1886–1982), leader of the 1909 Uprising of the 20,000 in New York, was born here, as were engineer Borys Kovalchuk (1937–2011) and actor Oleh Fandera (1934–2002). Locals honour Major Oleksandr Melnyk (1989–2022) and Captain Oleksandr Tsysar (1979–2015).

Landmarks and local highlights

Horodok lies on the Smotrych and Trostianets rivers, 52 km from Khmelnytskyi. Landmarks include St Stanislaus Church (rebuilt 1778), the Franciscan monastery with the icon of St Anthony of Padua, the late-18th-century Institute of Theological Sciences building, busts of Winogradsky and Hrushevsky and a protected oak in the centre. Since 2019 a lavender field blooms above the Smotrych, and the town is a centre of the Polish community. Our courier will deliver flowers anywhere in Horodok.
