Horodok: a town with a chronicle history

Horodok is first mentioned in the Galician-Volhynian Chronicle under 1213 as a well-fortified town known for its salt trade, which gave it the old names "Salt Horodok". In 1227 Prince Mstyslav the Bold stood here with his army, aided by Danylo Romanovych. The town received Magdeburg law in 1389. Between 1387 and 1434 King W?adys?aw II Jagie??o often lived in Horodok for long periods, and he died here in 1434. Ukrainian townspeople founded the Horodok Brotherhood in 1591, and in 1655 a battle near Horodok opened the way for Khmelnytsky's troops to besiege Lviv.

Notable people of Horodok

Horodok is the hometown of the Heroes of Ukraine Taras Kuleba (1993-2014) and Andrii Odukha, who died in 2014. Also born here were pianist Oksana Biretska, historian Stepan Horak (1920-1986), opera singer Ihor Horin (1904-1982) and engineer Ivan Ozarkevych (1895-1959), head of the Plast scouts' "Chervona Kalyna" kish. The writer Les Martovych worked here as an assistant lawyer in 1899-1903.

Horodok today

The town lies 25 km from Lviv on the Vereshchytsia River, a left tributary of the Dniester. Landmarks include St Nicholas Church with its bell tower (1510), the Church of the Annunciation (1633), the Church of St John the Baptist (1754), the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Transfiguration Monastery and the town hall. In the 14th-17th centuries Horodok was a craft town with 12 guilds; today it has an apple pectin plant and the Elit Flora garden centre. We deliver flowers to any district of Horodok.
