Husiatyn: a Magdeburg-law town on the Zbruch

Husiatyn is first recorded in 1431, when Polish and Lithuanian troops fought nearby after the death of Grand Duke Vytautas. In 1559 King Sigismund II Augustus granted it Magdeburg rights, three annual fairs and a Monday market. From 1574 the town belonged to the Kalinowski family, and in 1645 Field Hetman Marcin Kalinowski backed the building of a castle, a church and a Bernardine monastery. In 1772 the border along the Zbruch split Husiatyn: the western part went to Austria, the eastern part to the Russian Empire. The railway from Stanislaviv arrived on 31 December 1884.

Famous people of Husiatyn

Husiatyn is the birthplace of Cossack leader Severyn Nalyvaiko (?–1597) and his brother Demian Nalyvaiko (?–1627), an Orthodox churchman and writer of the Ostroh circle. Polish actor and director Stanis?aw Daczy?ski (1892–1964), American artist Irene Homotiuk Zielyk (1929–2015) and mathematician Volodymyr Kravets (1947) were also born here. In 2024 the town opened an Alley of Memory of Heroes; volunteer fighter Roman Mykhailyshyn (1988–2022) grew up here.

Places to know in Husiatyn

Husiatyn stands on the right bank of the Zbruch, next to Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park. Landmarks include the fortified St Onuphrius Church (second half of the 16th century), St Anthony's Church with Bernardine monastery cells (1610), the synagogue of the late 16th–17th century and the Ukrainian People's House. The Zbruch and Medobory sanatoriums work here, and the famous Zbruch Idol was found in the river near Lychkivtsi in 1848. We will deliver a bouquet to any address in Husiatyn.
