Khorol, a town with a chronicle history

Khorol has been known since 1083, when it was mentioned in the testament of Volodymyr Monomakh, making it one of the oldest chronicle towns of the Poltava region. Its name comes from the Khorol River and means "swift". The town revived in the late 16th century under the Vyshnevetskyi princes; a 1647 inventory counted 1,279 households, and Guillaume de Beauplan marked it on his map. From 1648 to 1782 Khorol was a company town of the Myrhorod Regiment, then a county town.

Notable people of Khorol

Natives include folklorist Mykola Tsertelev (1790–1869), one of the first publishers of Ukrainian folk poetry, actor Volodymyr Volkov (1929–2007) and writer Oles Ulianenko (1962–2010), the youngest laureate of the Small Shevchenko Prize. Poet and fabulist Levko Borovykovskyi (1806–1889) studied in Khorol and lived here in later life. The town honours soldier Yurii Hapula (1978–2022), who died during the Russian invasion.

Khorol lies on the Rudka River, which joins the Khorol 4 km away, on the E40 highway. Landmarks include the Khorol Botanical Garden, the Oak Grove with the Khorol Pit memorial (1990), the local history museum and an old pedunculate oak on Nebesnoi Sotni Street.
