Ichnia: a short history

Ichnia is first recorded in the 14th century, when it belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth; from 1590 it was owned by Prince Kostiantyn Vyshnevetskyi. In 1648–1649 it was the centre of the Ichnia Regiment, then a company town of the Pryluky Regiment, and a town hall was built in 1666. In the early 19th century the Halahan family founded a cloth manufactory and sugar and saltpetre works here. The Kruty–Ichnia–Pryluky railway arrived in 1894, and Ichnia became a town in 1957.

Notable people of Ichnia

Ichnia is the birthplace of sculptor Ivan Martos (1754–1835), author of the Minin and Pozharsky monument in Moscow and the Richelieu monument in Odesa, writer Stepan Vasylchenko (1879–1932), poet Vasyl Chumak (1901–1919), mechanics scientist Oleksandr Huz (1939) and American writer and publisher Sonia Greene (1883–1972), wife of H. P. Lovecraft.

Places every local knows

The town lies on the Ichenka River. In 1660 Yakym Somko was proclaimed hetman of Left-bank Ukraine in Ichnia. Landmarks include the Church of the Resurrection (1806–1810), the Transfiguration Church and the bell tower of St Nicholas Church (1879), plus monuments to Martos, Vasylchenko, Chumak and a Shevchenko monument (2009). Ichnia is known for ceramics and weaving, and the Ichnia National Nature Park is nearby. Our courier will bring flowers anywhere in Ichnia.
