Izium: from a fortress to the present day

The "Izium trail" across the old Izium ford was recorded as early as 1571, but the town dates its founding to 1681, when Kharkiv colonel Hryhorii Donets-Zakharzhevskyi built a large fortress that grew into modern Izium. In 1685 it became the seat of the Izium Sloboda Cossack Regiment, first led by Kostiantyn Donets-Zakharzhevskyi, with 13 towns and settlements under its command. By the early 18th century Izium was the most populous town of Sloboda Ukraine. On 10 September 2022 the city was liberated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Notable people of Izium

Izium is the birthplace of painter Serhii Vasylkivskyi (1854–1917), who celebrated Sloboda Ukraine in his work, of director and playwright Vitalii Seleznov, People's Artist of Ukraine, and of screenwriter and critic Borys Kryzhanivskyi. Junior sergeant Yevhenii Volkov (1999–2022), Hero of Ukraine, was also born here.

Izium today

The city lies at the foot of Kremianets Hill on the Siverskyi Donets River, surrounded by dense forests; the hill itself is a nature reserve of over 100 hectares with a 1985 memorial. Landmarks include the 17th-century Transfiguration Cathedral, the 18th-century Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, the 19th-century Ascension Cathedral and the former girls' gymnasium building.
