Iziaslav — a town of princely history

Iziaslav has been known since the 13th century as Zaslavl or Zaslav; the name is linked to Prince Iziaslav. From 1466 the town belonged to the Zaslavski princes, a branch of the Ostrozki family, who began building the castle. In 1673 it passed to the Sanguszko princes, who built a palace here, and in 1754 it received Magdeburg rights.

Writer Milii Yezerskyi and literary scholars Hryhorii Hai and Mykhailo Hon were born in Iziaslav.

Landmarks and local character

Iziaslav is the centre of the Iziaslav urban hromada in Shepetivka district, Khmelnytskyi region. The Horyn River divides Iziaslav into the Old Town and the New Town, which together keep an ensemble of 15th–18th-century residences and churches: the Zaslavski Princes' Castle, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (16th c.), the Bernardine Monastery with St. Michael's Church, the Sanguszko Palace and the 17th-century town walls with gate and towers.
