Yahotyn: from a Cossack company town to a city

Yahotyn is known from 1552, and Guillaume de Beauplan's maps of 1648 and 1650 show it as a fortified town with a fortress and a castle. From 1648 to 1781 it was a company town of the Pereiaslav Regiment. In the 1760s the last hetman, Kyrylo Rozumovskyi, bought land here and built a lavish estate. Between October 1843 and January 1844 Taras Shevchenko lived, with breaks, on the estate of Prince Mykola Repnin-Volkonskyi. A railway station and a sugar factory were built in 1899–1902, and in 1957 Yahotyn merged with neighbouring Lisniaky and became a city.

Notable people of the Yahotyn area

Painter Kateryna Bilokur (1900–1961), a master of Ukrainian folk decorative painting, was born in the village of Bohdanivka near Yahotyn. Mathematician Heorhii Voronyi (1868–1908), after whom the Voronoi diagram is named, was born and buried in nearby Zhoravka.

Yahotyn today

The city lies on the left bank of the Supii River in the Dnipro Lowland. It has the Yahotyn Historical Museum and an art gallery, next to which a monument to Hryhorii Skovoroda was unveiled in 2020, and the newly built Trinity Cathedral consecrated in 2016. The Kyrylo Rozumovskyi Landscape Park is a place for walks. The local economy rests on food production: a sugar plant, a dairy and a bakery.
