What to know about Kalynivka

Kalynivka was founded in the first half of the 18th century, and historical sources link its name to the magnate Kalynovskyi; the estate later passed to the Kholonevskyi family. The first known date is 1774, when it had 44 households and 143 residents. By 1885 Kalynivka was a market town and volost centre of Vinnytsia county, with a church, a synagogue, 28 shops and a brickworks. Across the Zherd River lies Varshytsia, once a separate village and now a district of the town. Kalynivka became a town on 11 November 1979.

Notable people of Kalynivka

Natives include Polish bibliographer and historian Jan Karol Sienkiewicz (1793–1860), Dakar Rally driver Vadym Nesterchuk (1970–2013), singer and composer Volodymyr Humenchuk (born 1971) and Ukraine and Dynamo Kyiv footballer Vitalii Buialskyi (born 1993). Honorary citizen Viacheslav Katrych (1979–2014), a fighter of the Myrotvorets battalion, was awarded the Order for Courage.

Kalynivka today

The town lies on the Podolian Upland along the Zherd, a tributary of the Southern Bug, 27 km north of Vinnytsia. It is a railway junction on the Kyiv–Odesa, Berdychiv–Vinnytsia and Koziatyn–Khmelnytskyi lines. Every year Kalynivka hosts the All-Ukrainian Stepan Rudanskyi Festival of Humour and Satire, and local industry includes the Vinnifrut juice plant.
