Kelmentsi: from the first record to today

Kelmentsi's documented history begins in 1559, when the settlement was called Kelmentsy. Legend traces the name to its first settler, an innkeeper called Kelman. It became an urban-type settlement in 1960, has been the centre of Dnistrovskyi Raion since 2020 and a settlement since 2024. Eighteen archaeological sites, including Trypillia, Cherniakhiv and Old Rus settlements, point to a much older past.

Kelmentsi lies in northern Bessarabia near the Moldovan border, close to the scenic cliffs of the Dniester Canyon. Landmarks include St Michael's Church (1892), a park with three ponds and wooden sculptures, a monument to local soldiers and the Kelmentsi mineral spring, a geological landmark.
