Kamianets-Podilskyi in brief
Archaeology dates Kamianets to the late 12th — early 13th century. In 1374 Prince Yurii Koriatovych moved the capital of the Podolian principality here from Smotrych, and the same year the town received Magdeburg rights and a 20-year tax exemption. In 1378 the Pope issued a bull founding a Catholic bishopric in the town. From 1672 to 1699 it belonged to the Ottoman Empire, and on 20 May 1784 the first hot-air balloon flight took place over Kamianets. From 22 March 1919 to November 1920 it was the capital of the Ukrainian People's Republic; the choir that made Mykola Leontovych's “Shchedryk” famous set off on its world tour from here.
