What to know about Kamin-Kashyrskyi

Kamin-Kashyrskyi was first recorded in 1196, and its 825th anniversary was marked at national level in 2021. Until the 17th century the town was simply called Kamin; the second part of the name comes from the Sanguszko-Koszerski princes who owned it. In 1628 Prince Adam Aleksander Sanguszko founded a Dominican monastery here, and after his death in 1653 the town belonged to the Krasicki family for over 200 years. The railway from Kovel arrived in 1915, and since 1940 the town has been a district centre. Native son Junior Sergeant Serhii Demianyk (1988–2014) was killed while leaving the Ilovaisk encirclement and posthumously awarded the Order for Courage, 3rd class.

People of Kamin-Kashyrskyi

Shevchenko scholar Yevhen Shabliovskyi (1906–1983), director of the Shevchenko Institute of Literature in 1933–1935, was born here, as was film director, actor and cinematographer Oles Sanin (born 1972), a Dovzhenko and Shevchenko Prize laureate. Historian Vasyl Kmetsynskyi (1923–1991) was the first director of the local history museum.

This Polissia town stands on the Tsyr River, with the remains of the Castle hillfort on its right bank. Key sights are the church and chapel of the former Dominican monastery (first half of the 17th century), the Church of the Prophet Elijah (1700), a monument of national importance, and the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos (1723).
