A short history of Karlivka

The sloboda of Karlivka is documented in October 1731, when General Johann Bernhard Weissbach used it as headquarters while building the Ukrainian fortified line; he is considered the author of its name. Field Marshal Burkhard Christoph von M?nnich renamed it Minikhpol in 1739, but the name lasted only until 1743, when the estate passed to Oleksii Rozumovskyi and later to Kyrylo Rozumovskyi, the last Hetman of Ukraine. Lev Rozumovskyi founded a cloth manufactory here in 1808, workshops built in 1860 grew into the machine-building plant, and Karlivka became a town in 1957.

Notable people of Karlivka

Natives include art restorer Luka Kalenychenko (1898–1968), actor Oleksii Kolesnyk (1950–2021), powerlifter Iryna Yavorska (born 1981) and Captain 3rd Rank Roman Riabko (1988–2022), who was killed defending Ukraine in Ochakiv on 24 February 2022.

Karlivka today

The town stands on the right bank of the Orchyk River about 50 km from Poltava, split by the Poltava–Lozova railway. Nearby are the 317-hectare Krasnoperivka forest and nature reserve, while the town itself has the Pedunculate Oaks park, a protected natural monument, and a Taras Shevchenko monument by the museum.
