Kalynopil, a town with a Magdeburg past

Kalynopil, first known as Kalnyboloto, is first recorded in 1568, when it belonged to the Bratslav Voivodeship and received Magdeburg rights from King Sigismund II Augustus. In 1648–1659 it was a company town of the Korsun Regiment, and the Zaporozhian Sich had a Kalnyboloto kurin. On 30 April 1792 King Stanis?aw August Poniatowski renewed its privileges and granted a coat of arms with a bison on a blue field. Renamed Katerynopil in 1795, it became an urban-type settlement in 1965, and the name Kalynopil took effect on 26 September 2024.

Natives include chemist and military engineer Oleksii Shuliachenko (1841–1903), American agrarian economist Wolf Ladejinsky (1899–1975), historian Oleksandr Lysenko (born 1955) and Honoured Artist of Ukraine Anatolii Ponomarenko. Junior Sergeant Pavlo Zakharov (1998–2022), born here, was posthumously awarded the Order for Courage, 3rd class.

The town lies in the valley of the Hnylyi Tikych and its tributary the Kalnybolotka, 124 km from Cherkasy. Worth seeing are St Michael's Church, built in the late 1990s, the Katerynopil Museum of Local History, the Tikych entomological reserve and the memorial to victims of the 1932–1933 famine.
