Khrystynivka: from railway settlement to town

Khrystynivka grew up around the railway: it appeared in 1891 as a settlement by Khrystynivka station, named after a neighbouring village known since 1642. Once the Vapniarka–Khrystynivka (1889), Koziatyn–Uman (1890) and Khrystynivka–Shpola (1891) lines opened, a junction with a locomotive depot formed here and the settlement became a major grain market. In early 1921, during a raid of the UNR Army, the unit of otaman Andrii Hulyi-Hulenko broke out of encirclement near Khrystynivka. It became a district centre in 1923, an urban-type settlement in 1927 and a town in 1956.

Notable people of Khrystynivka

Natives include mechanical scientist and corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences Mykola Holeho (1914–2012), rector of the Odesa Polytechnic Institute Kostiantyn Zablonskyi (1915–2006), philosopher Ninel Kostiuk (1926–2019) and choirmaster and conductor Ihor Okhrimenko (1969). Locals also honour junior sergeant Andrii Lemishenko (1978–2023), a full holder of the Order for Courage.

Khrystynivka today

The town lies 5 km from the M30 highway, and rail lines leave its junction station in four directions. Landmarks include the railway station, rebuilt in 1954 while keeping features of the older building, the monument to railway workers, the Obelisk of Glory (1966) and the monument to Ivan Gonta, the only one in Cherkasy Oblast.
