Kobeliaky, a Cossack fortress town

Kobeliaky already appears on the maps of Cornelis Danckerts (1620–1636) and Frederick de Wit (1632) and takes its name from the Kobeliachka River. From 1648 it was a company town of the Poltava Regiment: its hilltop fortress above the Vorskla guarded the Left Bank against Tatar raids and was strengthened by Bohdan Khmelnytsky. The Ottoman traveller Evliya ?elebi described it in the mid-17th century. From 1803 Kobeliaky was a county town, it received its coat of arms in 1843, and its railway station opened in 1870.

Famous people of Kobeliaky

Locals are proud of the bandurist, composer and conductor Hryhorii Kytasty (1907–1984), Hero of Ukraine. The computer scientist and academician Oleksii Ivakhnenko (1913–2007) and the actor Stepan Shkurat (1885–1973), People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR, were born here.

Kobeliaky today

The town lies mostly on the right bank of the Vorskla at the mouth of the Kobeliachka. Its landmarks include monuments to Bohdan Khmelnytsky (1962), Taras Shevchenko and Mykola Kasian, the Church of St George, consecrated in 2013, and the Kobeliaky Museum of Literature and Art.
